Introductory Note - Download Resources

Supporting notes and charts, for the four exercise routes, and charts for the synthetic flight area, are available for download as PDF files.

A Single tap on the Settings Icon, will present the Settings Options Page, on this page Single tap the Download Navex Charts and Notes button, and a Downloads webform will be displayed.

Complete the required form fields, and select the file download format, either Zip or PDF. Submit the form, and an email will be sent your email address, containing a URL link to the download site.

An internet connection is required for this action.

The downloaded file is in PDF format, which can be either printed, or it can be read in iBooks or similar.

The printed version is recommended as it can be used alongside RNS as reference material, when flying any of the four exercises.

Overview

Radio Navigation Simulator, referred to subsequently as RNS, is a 2D flight simulator, operating in a synthetic flight environment of navigation beacons and airfields.

RNS is equipped with flight instruments, flight controls, radio navigation instruments and receivers, enabling the user to practice radio navigation techniques and procedures, by flying the simulator in the synthetic flight environment, where all activity is depicted on a display chart.

A management system is also incorporated, enabling full control of the facilities of RNS.

This User Manual document provides an introduction to RNS, describing its basic facilities and operation.

The User Interface Control

The User interface operates using On Screen Finger Gestures to interact with the User manageable features and facilities of RNS.

The User interfaces, for the iPad, iPhone and iPod, are all based on the same design, and each interface control point, has been carefully designed and located, to provide easy and direct access, when its management gesture is applied.

The on screen Finger Gestures used to interface with the User manageable features and facilities of RNS, comprise of the following:

Gesture Typical Uses in Radio Navigation Simulator
Touch & Hold To activate a Facility, such as a toolbar, and keep it displayed only during the period the finger is in contact with the screen. The gesture is terminated by lifting the finger away from the screen. A two second delay occurs before the visual activity ceases, this allows the option of a brief 'Touch - Release - View' action of a data enunciator to be made.
Tap To select or de-select an Icon or Button where easy and clear access is available to the finger.
Double Tap To positively select and de-select features, where clear access is not always available, and/or, the result of inadvertent actions are undesirable.
Drag To scroll or pan the chart within the mapping pane
Pinch Pinch open - to zoom into the Chart
Pinch close - to zoom out of the Chart

Rotate

Rotational finger action, where an object such as an OBS Compass Card, or Heading Bug, is rotated to a new value, by describing with a finger, a circular rotation that follows the circumference of the instrument face.

The Touch and Press gesture may also be incorporated in the rotation, to display a data enunciator during the rotation.

The Directional Gyro

The Dgyro does not suffer from regular flight inaccuracies, and is automatically kept synchronised to the magnetic compass.

It also includes a Heading Bug.

Its associated Pop-Up control toolbar, which is activated with a Double Tap within the area of the Directional Gyro flight panel instrument, allows both the Heading and the Heading Bug to be set the required headings.

On the main Flight Panel the Heading Bug can be set by using a Rotation finger gesture where the Heading Bug, is rotated to a new value, by describing with a finger, a circular rotation that follows the circumference of the instrument face. The Heading Bug will move whilst the finger remains in contact with the screen.

The Touch and Press gesture is also incorporated in the rotation, to display the data enunciator during the rotation.

When the Mini Flight Panel is in use, the current Aircraft Heading and Heading Bug values are presented as Digital Displays.

The Directional Gyro Flight Panel Pop-Up toolbar is invoked with a Double Tap on either Digital Display area.

The Horizontal Situation Indicator - HSI

The HSI compass gyro in RNS, does not suffer from regular flight inaccuracies, and is automatically kept synchronised to the magnetic compass.

A Heading Bug is also present..

The HSI course deviation indicator (CDI), is always slaved to the NAV 1 Radio.

Because the HSI is effectively two instruments in one casing, it requires a different method of management in RNS, compared to the other panel instruments.

There are in the case of the HSI, two associated Pop-Up control toolbars and associated enuciators.

  1. The NAV1 Pop-Up is displayed to manage the OBS and NAV Radio tuning

  2. The DGYRO Pop-Up is displayed to manage the Aircraft Heading and the setting of the Heading Bug.

In order to accomodate the gesture control of the HSI, as well as the regular on-screen controls in the Pop-Up toolbars, a unique case exists for the gesture control of the HSI, which is described here.

The HSI Face touch area for gesture control is divided into a left and right part, divided at the vertical centreline of the instrument.

Setting and Managing the Nav 1 Radio and OBS.

In order to display the NAV 1 Pop-Up, the left side of the HSI face, should be double tapped.

  1. The regular NAV 1 Pop-Up and Enuciator will be displayed.
  2. The NAV 1 Radio can be tuned and the Use frequency set, using the increment and decrement buttons.
  3. The OBS can be set using the increment and decrement buttons.
  4. The OK button is pressed to accept the inputs, and dismiss the Pop-Ups.

This procedure may be seen in detail in the NAV1 and NAV2 description.

Using Gestures:

An alternative method of management, using finger gestures on the HSI instrument face, may also be employed to view the NAV 1 Radio settings, and to also to set the OBS, and with practice this can be a very quick.

A single tap on the left side of the HSI instrument face, will display the enuciator only, allowing inspection of both the NAV 1 Radio settings, and the OBS value.

The enuciator will remain displayed whilst the finger remains in contact with the screen, and for a further TWO seconds after the finger is lifted.

During the period that the enuciator is displayed, it also DE-ACTIVATES the association of the right half of the HSI instrument face from the Heading, and Heading Bug, and assigns all of the HSI surface for OBS finger gestures.

Using the above facilty, the OBS value can be changed and set, by describing a circular motion on the face of the HSI, which in turn rotates the central CDI assembly, stopping at the chosen value.

Note: Because there is a TWO second delay, after the finger is lifted, before the current control facility reverts to its normal state. The finger may be lifted and repositioned on the HSI face to continue rotation from a different location, as many times as required, so long as it is repositioned on the HSI face within the TWO second period.

Setting and Managing the Aircraft Heading and Heading Bug

In order to manage the Aircraft Heading and the Heading Bug on the HSI, the right side of the HSI face, should be double tapped.

  1. The regular DGYRO Pop-Up and Enuciator will be displayed.
  2. The Aircraft Heading can be set using the increment and decrement buttons.
  3. The Heading Bug can be set using its increment and decrement buttons.
  4. The OK button is pressed to accept the inputs, and dismiss the Pop-Ups.

This procedure may be seen in detail in the DGYRO description.

Using Gestures for Heading Bug Control:

The Heading Bug can be controlled in the same manner as the OBS is controlled by gestures, as outline above.

The main difference being that the right side of the HSI face is single tapped, to commence the procedure.

When the Mini Flight Panel is in use, the current Aircraft Heading and Heading Bug values are presented as Digital Displays, on the Basic Panel, and as Mini instruments on all PRO panels.

Flight Panel Pop-Up Toolbars & Enunciators

Two modes exist to manage the Flight Panel PopUp Toolbars and Data Enunciators.

Mode One - Full Control

In this mode - The chosen instrument or display is Double Tapped to activate, and Double Tapped to dismiss.

When selected, the toolbar is raised into the display, and partially overlays the bottom area of the flight panel, which itself been raised slightly during the process, to minimise the loss of visibility to important flight instruments.

The Enunciator at the same time, is raised and located over the panel coaming showing associated data.

Management activity can then take place.

Mode Two - Data Inspection

In this mode - A finger is placed in contact with the screen, on the chosen instrument, and held in place.

Whilst the finger is held in place, the Enunciator Only is displayed in its normal position over the panel coaming.

This allows the data associated with the chosen instrument to be displayed for inspection.

The Enunciator remains visible whilst the finger is in contact with the screen. Upon removal of the finger contact, the Enunciator is dismissed, after a two second delay.
